Meet Lucas Müller

Lucas Fernando Müller, Ph.D., is a descendant of Germans and Portuguese. They settled in Brazil’s southernmost state during the 19th century, where he grew up and fell in love with science and networking during his Computer Science bachelor’s degree. This carried into a Master (2014), and a Ph.D. (2020) degrees in Computer Science focused on Computer Networks at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)1.

During his doctoral studies, he also worked at the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA)2 at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) under the supervision of Kc Claffy, Matthew Luckie, Bradley Huffaker, and Marinho Barcellos.

Prior to joining Cisco, he was an Internet research scientist at UFRGS, CAIDA & Brazil’s National Education and Research Network (RNP), an assistant professor at the University of Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC), and led research & innovation products in national and international companies.

Dr. Müller speaking in a conference

Dr. Müller received the UFRGS, Institute of Informatics Top Honor Distinction Award conferred to Ph.D. graduate students who exhibited the highest scholarly excellence in research. Lucas was awarded distinct grants from national and international organizations (CNPq, CAPES, RNP, European Commission, Microsoft Research, National Science Foundation (NSF)) to lead critical studies on Internet Measurements, Routing, and Security.

As a researcher, he has published peer-reviewed papers in top-tier conferences and journals. His principal scientific focus has been on large-scale network measurements and analysis of Internet interconnections, particularly from a security perspective — and the power that data brings to individuals to drive the future design and implementation of systems, architectures, and methodologies.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Lucas was chosen two times as the top faculty member for excellence in teaching, received seven scholarship awards, and earn two top honor distinctions (Ph.D. and B.Sc.). In the industry, he helped to develop five innovative business products, have 01 patent granted with RNP, and co-founded a startup.

Above all, Dr. Lucas always had the privilege to work with and met many exceptional colleagues, professionals, researchers, and professors. More importantly, he likes to make friends for life. His motto is that it’s the journey and our contributions that matter in the end.
